I have been attempting to write my blog in honor of Father’s Day and a tribute to my Dad and here it is Friday night, June 15th and I have nothing. Sunday, June 17, 2012 is Father’s Day and I have not written a word. I shouldn’t say that, after several hours, I did type up a few paragraphs but apparently in my sleepy state last night, I shut down the program and did not save my work. I could not believe it, but it was okay because I was not pleased with what I wrote. I realized why this was so difficult, I would not be happy with anything I wrote for my Father’s Day tribute. There is nothing that I can write, no words that express, how I feel about this wonderful man I call, “Daddy.”
Take time today to recognize all the great fathers, whether it is your Dad, your husband-who is the perfect father, your Grandfather or a Father figure, make time to share some time with them, whether it is in person, by phone, at church or the cemetery. Fathers have a very important job and one day a year we recognize the love they give, the guidance, the friendship, the protection and support, the sacrifices that they make and the countless other things they do. One day a year just does not seem like enough recognition for all they do, all year through. It takes a brief moment to let dad know you are thinking of him. All of us enjoy a pat on the back and a message from someone we love now and then, fathers are no different. So recognize the man who has done so much for you. Don’t wait for Father’s Day, recognize him regularly. Whatever you decide to do this Father’s Day, let these good men know how special they are.
As I stated in the beginning, I wanted this blog to give tribute to my Dad. He deserves this and so much more. So I dedicate this blog to my Daddy and with Father’s Day just about here, let me share with you a few of my Dad’s favorite things. I hope you enjoy some of these fun things to do, crafts to create, favorite recipes and more to make this Father’s Day a day of fun for everyone.
Spending time with his children, that is one thing my Dad enjoys most. If it was up to Dad, all of us would be moving back in. Try this fun idea with Dad, A Picnic at Home, Have a picnic on the lawn. Spread a blanket out and enjoy some sandwiches, fresh fruit, and chips. Don’t forget the fruit juice! If the weather does not permit outdoor festivities, enjoy your picnic in the living room. And don’t forget the dessert. Dad loves dessert. Bake some easy cupcakes and try this ice cream recipe to go along with them. You can make your own ice cream and chocolate swirl drizzle, a fun and delicious activity.
“Ice Cream in a Baggie”
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup half and half
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 sandwich size Ziploc bags
1 one gallon size Ziploc bag
2 cups ice
1 tablespoon coarse salt
Put one small Ziploc bag inside the other and add the milk, half and half, sugar, and vanilla extract to the inside bag. Seal both bags securely, removing excess air. Add ice and salt to larger bag and place smaller bag inside. Seal firmly. Let the kids shake themselves silly — shaking, tossing, and turning the bag. Ice cream will be soft and ready to eat in 5 to 10 minutes. Enjoy! and for an added decor and chocolate touch, drizzle some of this homemade chocolate syrup over the top of each cupcake and ice cream scoop before you serve.
“Chocolate Syrup Drizzle” 2 cups of sugar, 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt, 1 cup cold water, 1 tbsp vanilla
Mix together cocoa and sugar; blend until cocoa is smooth and lumps are gone. Add water and salt; mix thoroughly. Cook over medium heat, bring to a boil. Boil until thick, keep stirring so that it doesn’t burn or overflow! Remove from heat; let cool. After the mixture has cooled, add the vanilla. After the meal and dessert, entertain Dad with A Puppet Show. Create your own puppets and put together a show for Father’s Day! Nothing could be easier than taking a paper bag and drawing on a face. Voila, instant puppet. You can add some color and creativity by bringing out the glue, scissors, yarn, glitter, markers and buttons. Use buttons for eyes, yarn for hair and markers to decorate the face. Here are some ideas:
You have the makings for a perfect day with Dad. A day he will treasure for a long time. I am a firm believer in being grateful each day for the blessings we have. So make Father’s Day more than just once a year. Thank your father often for all the good things he does, and for being one of your life’s blessings.
